How To Create a Mobile Trail Map

Overview

You can create mobile trail maps with or without tracks that can be downloaded and followed offline (i.e. without a cell connection). Maps that are "Published" and "Listed" can be found and used by anyone. Mobile Maps can also be shared via map preview URL links, in embeddable trail maps and via Facebook or Twitter. For convenience, use a computer to create Mobile Trail Maps.

Add Map*

From your JuicyTrails user account dashboard click "Maps" and then the "Add Map" button.

Title*

mobile-map-title

Create a short descriptive title for the map.

Slug

mobile-map-slug

Slugs are autogenerated from the Title. A slug is the end of a URL, and also represents download codes for mobile maps which can be included on physical maps so users can download mobile maps from them. Map Codes represent a means for sharing published maps, because users simply enter the map code to download maps. If you do not plan on using slugs as download codes, there is no need to change the slug. However, if you do, you'll probably want to create a slug that is short and easy to type into the "Find and Download maps Field" in JuicyTrails. Slugs can only contain letters, numbers, and hyphens.

Content

content

Mobile trail map text content appears in the information section of downloaded maps. Providing descriptive content to help users understand what your map is about, especially if you plan on listing the map.

Search Keywords

search-keywords

Users can go to JuicyTrails homepage to "Find and Download Maps" by typing in words to search. It is helpful to include keywords because users may not necessarily search using words that appear in the title. For example, a user may not remember the trail name "401", and search for "mountain bike crested butte colorado". Since many users tend to search by activity and/or nearest city, we recommended always including the intended trail activity and nearest city/town names. Be sure to separate keywords using commas. For example, for the 401 map, we could enter "mountain bike, crested butte, colorado" as search keywords.

Tile Quality

tile-quality

JuicyTrails can resample map tiles at lower resolutions to save memory. JuicyTrails default tile quality setting is 80, or 80% of 100. The default resolution is set at 80 because we've found it to be a good compromise in most cases. If your map is over 30 Mb in size, consider setting the map below 80 to reduce the file size. Otherwise, there isn't much of a need to mess with this setting.

Publishing Options

publishing-options

If you do not want anyone to have access to your map, then do not publish or list the map. Maps that are not published or listed can only be found in the user's account who created the map. Published maps are accessible via their direct URL address, but not listed in JuicyTrails map or search results. You can share maps that are not published by sharing the URL link for the map or sharing the slug (i.e. the map download code). Listed maps appear in JuicyTrails map and search results. Mobile maps work best when they are "Published" and "Listed".

Map Anchor

map-anchor-section

mobile-map-anchorThe map anchor is the latitude/longitude center point of a map that users will be taken to when they open the map. Always, always, position the map anchor for your map, by either entering the latitude/longitude points manually or by dragging the anchor icon in the map to the desired location. If you forget to position this anchor within the area of your map download tiles, your mobile map will open in Crested Butte, CO, our home sweet home.

We recommend first moving the map below to where your map tiles are located in the map, selecting the download tiles, then clicking the "Bring Anchor to Center of Map". Then place the anchor exactly where you'd like the map to center when the map is opened, preferably on a popular trail in the map to help users recognize the map when it opens.

Map Markers

Add waypoint markers to the map by right clicking on map locations where you'd like them to appear. After your marker is placed it is possible to select four marker options in the Map Markers area:

  • Select the marker style to be shown from the drop-down options.
  • Add description text in the blank field.
  • Directions Button? adds a link users can click for getting Google Map directions to the latitude/longitude point.
  • Remove the marker - removes the marker from the map.

Map Bounds

map-bounds

The map bounds tool limits users to downloading tiles within the blue rectangle in the map, which can be drawn by clicking the map bounds tool in the map area and checking the "Limit users of the app to the selected bounds" in the Map Bounds section. When a map is opened users will be limited to viewing tiles within the blue boundary lines. We included this tool because it's useful for conserving JuicyTrails tile server memory. It's totally optional.

Address Field

Enter a US [city, state] to move the map if you'd rather not pan and zoom the map to your mobile map's location. Landmark searches don't work very well because many landmarks are not included in OpenStreetMap data.

Create Mobile Map*

mobile-map-area

The map area is where you assemble components for the mobile map described below. Note, selecting map tiles (colored transparent orange) and correctly positioning the map anchor are the only two required steps. You can create maps with or without tracks.

  • Select Map Tiles - Select which map tiles to include in the map by clicking the left mouse button. Selected tiles appear as transparent orange squares. Deselect by clicking them again.
  • Create map markers - Right-click the map where you'd like them to appear, and edit their style, and content in the Map Markers field as described above.
  • Select map bounds map-bounds-tool - Limits users map tile download to selected bounds. Follow the Map Bounds instructions above. This is an optional step.
  • POSITION THE MAP ANCHOR mobile-map-anchor - Once you have the mobile map tiles selected click the "Bring Anchor to Center of Map" button above, then place it on the map at a point where you'd like the map to be centered when a user first opens a map. If you forget to do this the map will open in Crested Butte, CO, the default center. The map anchor point is also the point where mobile map download markers are generated in the JuicyTrails homepage map.

Map Tracks

map-tracks

You can include tracks in the map by selecting them. Only "listed" tracks can be selected, and only tracks located within the map viewing area appear in the list. Creating mobile maps with tracks is the only way to follow tracks in JuicyTrails. Select tracks after selecting map tiles.

Map Marker

  • juicytrails-hiking-map-marker JuicyTrails Orange Map Marker - this option is suitable for maps of multi-user trails or multi-user maps (i.e. a map intended for more than one type of trail activity).
  • juicytrails-hiking-map-marker hiking map
  • juicytrails-hiking-map-with-track-marker hiking map with track
  • juicytrails-mountain-biking-map-marker mountain biking map

Facebook

Once your map is saved, you can share it to Facebook. Facebook shares look better if they have promotional images and text content provided for the share. While you can create your own promotional image, we usually take a screenshot of the map preview and chose that for the promotional image. For the text, we often simply copy and paste the map content created above into the description field.
